On December 23, 1941, Japanese warplanes descended on Rangoon, killing between 1,000-2,000 civilians in the first raid. Christmas Day brought a second apocalypse—over 100 aircraft attacked, leaving 5,000 dead. The outnumbered Flying Tigers and RAF pilots fought desperately overhead using revolutionary tactics, while below, the city burned. This bombing shattered British colonial authority and triggered a mass exodus that would claim tens of thousands more lives as refugees fled toward India.
